Back into the swing of things

The good news is that I seem to be over my run of bad luck with little medical issues. My last problem was cellulitis in my left foot but luckily now I can get it into a shoe and the only problem is a little extra spasm in that leg and some swelling around the ankle. Last Friday was my first day back in the gym and after a month away from it I was certainly feeling it all weekend. I was back in there yesterday and I don't feel too bad today, so hopefully my body adjusts to being worked on pretty quickly.

This afternoon we are heading out to Southbank to go for a push. It's pretty warm today but hopefully by 5:30 this afternoon it has cooled off a fair bit. There is a good chance of some rain and even a storm later on so hopefully that hits once we are done. I'm looking forward to it, it's great to be out and about again.

Christmas is fast approaching, so hopefully we can get that out of the way quickly so we can really go hard at preparing for 2010. We are planning a preseason trip to Adelaide to play some games against South Australia. This should be really good for us as they are a team that we tend to struggle with. Hopefully we can find some sponsors to help us out with this trip and our 2010 campaign. Getting as much game time in the preseason as possible is vital to our success and development this year. We really don't play all that much over the year with the national competition only being held over 3 weekends for the year. But preseason activity costs money... money we don't have, so very soon we'll be looking for some assistance....hopefully you know someone that can help... perhaps the business where you work? Who knows, we'll see what we can muster up.

Hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday period hopefully I can get on here a couple more times before then anyway.

Wheelchair Rugby with the Gold Coast Titans

Hey all, I know my posts have been few and far between lately so I'm hoping to keep you up to date a little more from here on in as we head towards the 2010 season.

Yesterday we had a rugby demo with a few of the players from the Gold Coast Titans down on the coast. Without too much preparation we were into and we were having a game against a Preston Campbell led Titans outfit. The boys started to get the hang of it pretty quickly with Preston showing that his craftiness with the ball translated over to the wheelchair form of the game too.

A good time was had by all and hopefully during the year we can tee up a few more games with the boys. A few of them found that it certainly gave their arms a workout that they were not use to.

On a personal note I think I found a good seating setup in my new chair. I was having trouble getting a 'good lap' to rest the ball in, but after a little bit more tinkering with the strapping in the seat I think I have solved the problem. The new chair feels great. I'm loving the 26" wheels and the chair turns beautifully....no more excuses now!

Here are some highlights of our game from yesterday.

Cheers!!

WOW this is out of date

It's been pointed out to me that this blog was really out of date so I guess it's time for a whirlwind update. The last post was from just after the 2nd Melbourne round where we set our season record to 6-6. Since then we have had the 3rd and final round in Brisbane and the Jetstar Gold Coast Wheelchair Rugby Titans ended the 2009 NWRL season in 3rd place, behind the South Australian Sharks and eventual champions, the NSW Gladiators.

The lead up to the final round was one where we worked very hard, knowing that it all was going to be left on the court. In the lead-up we also had hospital demonstrations to hold, Rhys and Amanda Tappenden had a baby girl, Olivia, and we also had filming for a segment on kids show Totally Wild (which should be airing in the coming weeks). Import Troye Collins joined us a week before the round, allowing us to train together and become more accustomed to his game. The week before the round was hot! Brisbane was having 30+ degree days and we knew if the heat kept up it would play to our advantage over the teams from the cooler states.

The weekend of the games came around, and while still warm, it wasn't as hot as the week leading up to the event. We opened the weekend with a match-up with Victoria, who were unfortunately understrength. Greg Smith was out with an elbow injury and Bryce Alman was out ill, although he would be coming up later in the weekend to help bolster their side. Being understrength, we easily accounted for Victoria. Later on the opening day we played season favourites NSW. We tried all we could to contain Ryley Batt, but containing Ryley is a lot easier said than done. In saying this, we managed to end up the game only 7 goals behind. Errors with the ball hurt us and we knew if we could tighten up our offense, and got a little bit of luck in defense, then just maybe we could cause an upset should we meet NSW in the finals on Sunday.

The follwing day saw us match up against South Australia. This was the first round for the year that they were at full strength. We always seem to have trouble matching up against them with Steve Porter and George Hucks causing trouble for us all over the floor. In a close match, yet again, SA managed to pull a few goals clear in the final quarter and we weren't able to close up the gap. This left one more game for the regular season against Western Australia. WA had battled all year against stronger line-ups while battling injury and illness. We were able to account for them again without too much trouble which should have had us playing Victoria in the semi finals, but on the other court NSW were playing SA and shockingly SA accounted for NSW by about 9 or 10 goals. This result meant that we would now play SA in the semi final for a place in the grand final.

The following day rolled around and I have to say home rounds are a huge advantage. Having your own bed and food and car makes everything about the round more relaxed and restful. Anyhow, we had to beat SA this time around. We pushed hard and tried hard, but unfortunately we couldn't get the monkey off our back and the same old story played out again with SA pulling away in the final quarter. The disappointment of our season ending set in, but we had to shake it off quickly as after a short break we had to suit up again to play against Victoria in a playoff for 3rd place, while SA and NSW would prepare to meet in the grand final later that day.

We started strongly against Victoria much to the delight of a large contingent of family and friends (mostly Jamie's family!) and were able to continue on with the job untroubled by Victoria. So we secured 3rd place which was a relief, 4th place would have been a disaster.

Later NSW cruised past SA by about 30 goals, a result that you would expect everytime these two sides met, NSW seemingly not having any of the 'issues' they had the night before. A large crowd was in for the final game which was good to see.

I've got to give props to the Sporting Wheelies crew that put on the weekend. Without experiencing the accommodating and transfers side of the weekend, everything was organised really well...thanks to all of those guys.

Presentations followed the final game with no surprises as Ryley Batt was named MVP for the season. The All Star 4 was presented and named to that line-up was Steve Porter (SA), Cameron Carr (Gold Coast), Andrew Harrison (WA), and Ryan Scott (Gold Coast). I picked up an award also, named Best New Talent for the year.

Since the round I have been laying low with bursitis in my left elbow. It's been a few weeks now, and after antibiotics and antiinflammatories for all that time, it is only now starting to show signs of going down. I ordered my first rugby chair following the final round also, so that is due to get here in a few weeks. Hopefully this elbow settles down quickly now so I can get back into the gym and when the chair gets here I can start pushing again in preparation for 2010.

Titans square the ledger at 6-6 for the season

I've been pretty slack in wrapping up last weekends second round in Melbourne that saw us go 2-4 for the weekend, which takes us to 6-6 for the season. We'll go into the final round in Brisbane with a full squad again and will be hopeful of finishing off in outright second place.

The final day of play in Melbourne saw us square off against SA and WA. We dug ourselves into early trouble against SA, going down by around 7 in the first quarter. That kind of margin was going to be hard to make up and we couldn't find an answer for George and Steve throwing long balls for each other all game.

After playing the full game I was glad to be getting a break before our final game against WA. We really needed to make sure we finished the weekend off with a win. We came out pretty strong and managed to force turnovers and establish a handy buffer. We were able to run multiple lineups for the game and maintain our lead throughout.

Finally the weekend was over and we could get out of the cold of Melbourne and thaw out back home. Cam was already thinking about Billy Chu's at the airport before we were even on the bus! There were plenty of sporting teams at the airport heading home. I managed to spot the GC17 AFL squad, the QLD girls Volleyball, the AIS Men's basketball team and a coupl eof others from memory.

After issues with Valentino Rossi's helmet and an overbooked flight we finally got home at around 1030. I tell you, it was good to back in my own bed!

Here's a few snaps from the weekend.

0-2 after day 1

Day 1 of competition saw us go down against Victoria and NSW.  Our Victorian match up started off pretty slow in the cold conditions and the scoreline remained tight with the sides going goal for goal for much of the game. A couple of silly early turnovers though had us chasing a two goal deficit for the first three quarters before the Vics were able to extend the lead in the final stanza. I was pretty buggered after playing the whole game.  Thankfully we had a game off the recover before taking on NSW.

The match up with NSW was going to be a bit experimental for us, trying different things to try and minimize the effect Ryley has on the game. When we got things right our offense wasn't too bad but forcing turnovers was tough.  We used our bench this game with everyone logging good minutes. In the end we went down by 9.

Thai food for dinner last night saw Cameron in tears over a meal mixup and fish cakes that never quite made it.

Today we have a late start at 3pm against WA (I think) and then NSW again following that game (I think).
